Varndean Girls' Alumni Home pages

Historically Varndean Girls' School has had close links with the boy's school across the campus since their beginnings in York Place in the early 1880s. At the York Place Board School there were separate Heads for boys and girls but they shared a common school magazine. Since the 1930s they shared the Varndean Campus with Balfour Road Infant and Junior School, the source of so many Varndean alumni.
In 1975 the sixth form transferred to Varndean College (formerly the Boys' School) and in 1979 boys were allowed into the girls school for the first time. It then became a mixed High School for pupils aged 11 to 16 years.
The Old Girls' Association was first convened in February 1904, and sadly was wound up in the early 1980s. In 1999, in celebration of past links between the two grammar schools, and between the current High School and College, the Old Varndeanian Association altered its constitution so as to welcome past pupils of the Girls' School into its membership.
Links from this page are devoted to news and nostalgia associated with the school before 1982. We would welcome any photographs, anecdotes etc., which you would like to share with others via these pages. Please e-mail details.
