This photograph comes from the front cover of the Varndean Field Club magazine "Notes and Queries" summer term of 1948. It was edited by Michael Shorter and R W J Dew. The photograph was taken by each H B Thompson and was accompanied by a leading comment which read as a follows:- "It was in September 1945 that Varndean welcomed Miss Wilson to the staff and in the following October that she became the fifth President of the Field Club. Now, barely three years later, we experience the sweet sorrow of bidding her farewell and it is to those three years of untiring service that this edition of notes and queries is dedicated " There follows a now fairly illegible eulogy about Miss Wilson but it contains no information about where she was going. My only recollection of a biology mistress was being taught in my first year by Mrs David. Was that the Miss Wilson who had married, or another teacher? I have no recollection of Mrs David's appearance but I still have a small book "How to recognise British Wild Birds" by Eric Pochin published in the Young Naturalist series which I received from her as a reward/prize for a collection of seeds and autumn leaves collected in my first term.
