Our database holds information about all pupils of the former York
Place / Varndean (Grammar) School for Boys 1884-1975, including the
"Mixed" School up to that year. It also holds some
information that we have received about former pupils of Varndean
Girls School, Varndean High School and Varndean College, though this
is far from complete. If you are aware of names that are missing from
the list, then please let
me know.
When searching, you may enter either a surname, a year group or both.
In this context, a person's yeargroup is the year in which they would
have reached the age of 11 years, irrespective of when they actually
started at the school/college - this is a "best attempt" at
grouping people correctly. For instance, the majority of people who
were born between September 1959 and August 1960 started at secondary
school in September 1971, so would appear in that yeargroup. Where
someone is known to have belonged to a different yeargroup (perhaps
they entered Varndean when they were 10 years old), then an override
has been put in place to reflect this.
An underscore character ("_") may be used as a wildcard to
replace a single character. For example, if you search for
"HEN_Y" then your search will return both HENLY and HENTY.
However, if you enter "HENL_" then HENLY will be returned
but not HENLEY. You may enter multiple underscore charaters if you
wish - for instance if you enter "19__" in the yeargroup
then your search will return members of every yeargroup in the
twentieth century. Be warned though - the wider your search, the
slower the response! |
