60 OVs and their partners assembled at the West Hove Golf Club for the
Annual OVA Dinner. This out of town venue was chosen by the OVA Council
as, compared with town centre hotels, it offers an excellent standard
of food and service, coupled with very reasonable bar prices. |

The
evening proceeded under the guidance of MC Paul Rawlinson. After the
meal, the Loyal Toast was proposed by Jim Ryan, guest of OVA President
Jack Beavis. A fellow Consultant Surgeon of Jack's from University College
Hospital, Jim tended many of the casualties following the July bombings.
Jack then took the microphone, and gave a 'walkabout', talk. He congratulated
Derek and Brenda Ashcroft, who unfortunately were unable to be present,on
their

Golden Wedding, and Chris and Mary Bintcliffe on their recent Diamond
Wedding. After a few reminiscences about our schooldays, Jack went on
to pay a tribute to Alan Jenkins, Principal of Varndean College for the
past 18 years. Alan is retiring from post at the end of August, and Jack
referred to the excellent job he had done in maintaining the high standards
in education for which the name Varndean had become a byword. On behalf

Association, Jack presented Alan and his wife, Elaine, with a canteen
of cutlery, and a specially commissioned drawing of Varndean College.
Then followed the raffle, which raised £300 for IDEALS, the President's
charity. |
